A word from Kevin O'Hagan.
When I initially developed the idea for this book, I sat down and thought long and hard about whether anyone would want to read about my life in the Martial Arts. After all there were more experienced, talented and successful individuals in the Martial Arts world that haven’t yet put pen to paper, so why did I feel I had something different to offer? With that thought in mind I decided to put the project on the back burner and go on with other activities in my life. I had too many doubts about the whole idea, so I tried to forget about it. Fifteen months later I re-visited the project and this time viewed it in a more positive light. Firstly I realised I had devoted a quarter of a century and then some, to the Martial Arts. I can honestly state that in all that time there have been very few occasions when I haven’t been training, trying to improve my abilities and absorb more and more information. Until recently at forty years of age I competed at professional level in mixed Martial Arts Competition. There are few sportsmen or athletes who stay that long in their choosen disciplines. In this country when a sportsman reaches thirty years of age he is deemed “over the hill”. If they continue beyond this they are thought of as somebody really special. I also noted how the Martial Arts had shaped my life and took me from a young, green and slightly insecure fourteen year old boy, along an exciting, challenging and many varied journey to where I am now. Along the way I have met some interesting characters. The good, the bad, and the MAD! I have made many true friends and been inspired by people of genuine class. I’ve experienced a multitude of combat systems, traditional, modern and electic and gathered vast quantities of knowledge and know how. I have also sweated blood and tears for the cause and trained beyond what I thought a human being was capable of enduring. As that young boy I never dreamt I could achieve the things I have done. On the big scale of things they may not seem important to those who have tasted greater and bigger success but for me from my humble beginnings I have moved a few “mountains”. My success cannot be measured in riches and monetary gain but from inner satisfaction of having reached some of my long-term goals in life which have given me much happiness, belief, confidence and strength. I have fought and conquered many of my internal battles and this in turn has given me a better life. This book will track my time in the Martial Arts from beginning right up to present day. I will tell you my story straight, no fabrication, no exaggeration and no outlandish claims. I will tell it how it was, no punches pulled, the good and the bad. Hopefully it will entertain, inform and amuse as well as give great in-sight into the exciting and sometimes crazy world that is Martial Arts.
