There will always be the school of thought out there that will say that children are not mentally mature enough to handle dangerous Self-defence techniques, and that they could use them against other children in the playground at school resulting in drastic consequences. There is also the opinion that our children should not be subjected to the truths about violence and the horrific things that are becoming all the more frequent in today’s society. Instead they should enjoy being children and not allowed to grow up with any knowledge of such things. In answer to such statements I would say ask any parent that has lost a child at the hands of a child murderer and see if they given the choice would have preferred their child to have been armed with some basic and functional techniques that just may have given them a fighting chance at creating the opportunity to escape. I think they would say yes. As I write this difficult text in the summer of 2002 there have been three further tragedies that have knocked us as a nation, the abduction and murder of best friends Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells in Soham, Cambridgeshire. Then just the other day came confirmation of the worst for the family of Amanda ‘Millie’ Dowler who went missing from Walton-on-Thames railway station more than six months ago. So please don’t bury your head in the sand. It should be clear to all just how bad society has become. Our way of dealing with this subject must be pro-active. Start working with your kids from the age of four or five. You should start making them aware of the dangers they could face. To a degree you must frighten them enough to make them realise just how serious this problem is. When they realise it’s serious they will listen. Society is full of sick individuals who prey on the most vulnerable members of our population ‘our children’. We as parents cannot be there to protect our children every second of every day. Surely it must be worth the risk to let our children learn an effective method of enhancing their own Personal Safety. Before you consider designing a workable Self-Protection programme for your child I suggest that you read the entire contents of this short book first then have a good think about the subject matter and then go on to use as few or as many of the suggested methods as you see fit as the parent or guardian of your child. However vital I tell you this information is and it is very much need-to-know stuff for both children and parents please be sure to read it with an open mind.
