Through Understanding & Exposure
A UC Instructional lecture by Lee Morrison
Part one: Available NOW
Outside of the more Combative or Reality based systems available, the most neglected aspect in the Martial Arts, Combative Sport and mainstream Self-defence relate to the mental aspect of any potentially violent confrontation. The two main areas within this context relate to; Fear Control and the cultivation of a Combative Mentality or Mindset. Part one of this two part UC Instructional lecture relates to the subject of Fear Control; or more importantly, understanding the difference between fear which is anticipation of an unknown outcome and the natural bio-chemistry of Adrenaline along with all of its associated effects. Knowledge dispels fear of the unknown and this instructional lecture will present proven methods designed to educate the viewer through knowledge and understanding of the adrenal response, which in turn will put you on the road to developing a strategy for management of the same. From understanding; must follow exposure, if any degree of desensitization is to be gained, here we look into ways in which he can employ structured simulation and scenarios drills designed to illicit the adrenal response along with some of its associated effects on the mind and body. Part one sets the scene for a further more in-depth look in part two, into access and control of some of our most intense emotions. This 2-part series will benefit anyone interested in managing stress relating to violent confrontation.
Lee has asked me to review this DVD on Fear and his
interpertation of how this biological emotion and state of mind affects us all
when dealing with agression abd confrontation..
Fear is an area that most 'hard men' types are in denial
about because their peers may look at them as being afraid, cowardly and unable
to fight. The truth of the matter is that fear affects us all and we cannot
stop it from happening. The best we can do is manage it. So Lee has presented
his offering on fear to a live aduience and has presented it her, unedied in
its raw form. Some of what Lee has to say may need a rewind due to the slight
echo on the sound quility, but this is how live sound is. But it dosent affect
the content or the quality of the information that Lee is transfering.
I will add here some of the subject matter covered in the
DVD which is spoken, and supported by sketches and on screen display to provide
further insight into the topic of FEAR as contained within the DVD.
Fear
What is fear?
Fear defined
Anticipation
Adrenaline
Bio-chemistry
Natural Psyiology being essential for survival
Fight or flight
Breathing responces
Panic
Stressfull situations
The chemical cocktail of emotions
Office related fear
Theory module
Resting heart-rate rising and lowering
How the body shuts down when heartrate rises to 140bpm
How different parts of the brain are affected by raised
heartrate
Using experience, mindset, breathing and confidence to
control fear and the raising of your heartrate
How it affects your cognitive/thinking process
Losing your fine motor skills and how this changes your
abilities.
Psychomotor abilities are also covered in this DVD which
informs and educates the viewer on different aspects of motor fitness.
The DVD explaines how the loss of oxygenated blood affects
us when drawn away from the areas of the body that allows us dextirity, hand
and eye co ordination for movements such as martial arts skills, such as
trapping. Lee explsins how this process, by defult, revets and enhances us to
use our gross motor skills and also refered to as our 'caveman skills.'
It also covers gross motor skills which gives us increased
strength and speed and making us more tollerant to pain.
Examples are given of the affects of adrenalin in fights,
car accidents, arguments etc to show how the same adrenal effects take place
but in different environments.
Thngs such as hearing impairment in situations of danger are
also covered. A great unusal example was given using a piano but I wont give
that away here, you will need to watch the DVD.
He also covers periphial vision and how its size rapidly
changes in confrontation to tunnel vision. How pre-fight shakes affect you,
mostly uncontrolably.
Lee also covers the pros and cons of tunnel vision but does
begin to slip into phrases like 'flanked assault', 'pincer approach' which is
meaninless to most people that are not involved in combatives training or of
military insight. Im not having a dig at Lee here but I firmly believe that the
terninology that used for an intended aduience should stay at that level,
blinding people with science and words that are not neccesary are in my opinion
counter productive. You want the student to walk away having absorbed and learnt
something and not misunderstanding a concept due to words or phrases that they
dont understand. Maybe the aduience Lee was teaching on the day were combative
participants so would understand all the terminoloy and phraseology, therefore
my comments would not apply to them, but the DVD is on general sale so should cater
for the bigger market. Lee has filmed heaps of higher level material just for
the combatives market so to do a few entry level ones for those outside of
Lee's system, would be good. This information that i have provided here is only
part of the DVD's contents. My suggestion is that if you find this information
usefull to you, get Lee's FEAR DVD and see the whole thing for yourself. I
enjoyed the rawness of the filming which showed the subject matter taught
simply with no bells and whistles. Watch it and learn some real usefull material.
