Easy and Very Effective
By Alan Charlton Self Protection Association
Would you learn to swim on a football pitch? How high could you bounce on a trampoline without any springs? If your child wants to learn to ride a bike, the reality is at some point they have to get on the bike.
My interest in the fighting arts goes back over many years, and my understanding of what works to protect you in the street was formed after a number of hard lessons. Having my face punched in and being kicked like a football down a flight of stairs was one of them, and working the door of a nightclub focuses your mind I can tell you. After years of training in the fighting arts I only wanted more and more stuff, what’s that throw, what’s that lock, kick, punch, jab, hook, elbow, block and fan striking techniques. The stuff I was keen to get my hands on was just stuffing, padding out unworkable ideas taught by people who never face the reality of violence.
So getting a copy of ‘The Human Stun Gun' the first in a series of DVD’s in titled lessons with Jamie O’Keefe, I knew that it wasn’t going to be about making karate work on the street or ground fighting drills you can use in a phone box.
If you’re a fan of the Newbreed books and been lucky enough to training with or attended one of Jamie’s seminars you will enjoy and get a lot from this DVD.
The opening testimonials made at the beginning of the DVD are from people who have trained, worked with, and seen first hand, Jamie deal with the reality of street violence.
Yes most of them wouldn’t win a beauty competition and I’m not going to be slimmer of the year. But how many self defence instructors do you know who would have that level of support, I can only count them on one hand.
EASY
You can do this technique, eyes open or closed the skill in the technique is something you have been doing for years. You don’t have to travel and find a wise monk sitting under a tree on a mountaintop to give you the hidden secret or spend hundreds of pounds on private lessons with an instructor.
From black belt to white belt, male or female, tall, short, fat or thin it’s harder to ride a bike than learn this technique. Its not more stuff to learn, its less. Believe me less is what works when your back is against the glass door of a kebab shop on a Saturday night. Trying a wrist lock and takedown on the gorilla whose just rolled in from the pub into the kebab shop and looking for a free kebab, is a dojo fantasy. A wrist lock on the kebab hunting silver back is about as realistic as me telling myself, if I have the salad with the kebab it not as fattening.
EFFECTIVE
You have to be confident that what you know works and, works when you haven’t had time to warm up. Just standing at the bus stop, walking home or waiting to give your order at the local takeaway, then in a split second you’re faced with a problem. Maybe two or three problems, all shouting and having a go at you for no other reason than just because you are there. Yes its better to walk away, don’t provoke the situation, get away from the threat and yes in a perfect world a kebab would only have twenty-five calories.
Sometimes you have to get physical, because sometimes you have no other choice, and the last thing you need is to try something that is unworkable. The shock you can deliver with this technique can put your attacker down. Many have felt it at Jamie’s seminars, the guys who train with Jamie have felt it and many a, ‘let’s have go Saturday night problem’ have woken up on the pavement wondering what the hell just happened.
It’s very fast and easy to practise. On the DVD Jamie shows you many training aids you can use to practise this, slowly showing you the technique and then speeding it up.
I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone. If you have enjoyed any of Jamie’s books I’m sure you have already ordered this DVD, but if you’re training only takes place inside a leisure centre you need to take a look at these lessons with Jamie O’Keefe.
One more thing, enjoy the out takes on the DVD
